The Center for Latino Progress, through its BiCi Co. program, improves youth and adult safety, while also increasing our community’s mobility and access to jobs. “Bici” is the Spanish nickname for bicicleta (bicycle) and Co. represents our comunidad (community). Located at 95-97 Park Street at the south edge of downtown, BiCi Co. is a both a storefront and welcoming space for both enthusiasts and the bicycle curious. BiCi Co.’s successful summer pilot program in 2015 had 30 teens learning bike safety, mechanics, bicycle science, and history. Now BiCi Co. has expanded to include year-round programs and services for adults and youth – including a fully functioning bike shop.
Two-wheeled human-powered transport is popular among Hartford teens and adults for both transportation and recreation. When the last bike shop in Hartford closed in 2014, the Center for Latino Progress realized that this was an opportunity to create a community bike shop with youth programming that goes beyond the simple need for transportation and addresses many community needs.
